Christmas Gifts for Sewists

This post may contain affiliate links so I earn a commission. Please read my disclosure for more info.

If you are not a sewist, finding gift ideas for your sewing friends and family may feel challenging. You probably have no idea where to start. These are a few ideas of gifts that might be unique, useful and interesting! Each item is linked with the corresponding sales page on amazon for your convenience. I do earn commissions from Amazon sales which helps to keep my content flowing. However, if you have a local store to shop at please shop local. We all know that is better for the local economy! And as a small hometown business myself, I appreciate each client who chooses my business.

Personal Favorite

Sewing Carrying Case

For several years I have been traveling to see my clients. I was struggling to find a way to organize my things until I found this case. This is my absolute favorite item on the list! It is much less clunky than the sewing boxes of the past.

Stocking Stuffer Ideas

Seam ripper with a magnifier:

This is a great gift for a friend or family member who sews but is having limited vision these days.

Magnetic Wrist Pin Cushion

For sewists having those pin close by is so important!

Easy Glide Seam Ripper

I recently started using these instead of a regular seam ripper and absolutely love them! It does take a knack to learn how to use them but definitely a time saver when having to remove a bunch of seams.

6″ and 12″ Ruler

6″ rulers I find especially useful for alterations, and measuring the seam allowance that needs to be taken in.

Especially for Young Sewists

Fabric Scissors, especially made for smaller hands

Children often have a hard time with standard sewing/ fabric shears, but my students find these scissors easy to use!

Basic Machines for new sewists

Basic Brother Machine

This machine has great reviews. This has all you need to start your sewing journey. It includes all the stitches needed for sewing knit or woven fabric, with a variety of presser foot attachments.

Basic Singer Machine (not computerized)

Similar to the brother machine, this singer is equally suitable for a beginner, with a few less fancy stitches and not as many presser feet attachment options.

Sewing Reads: For the Friends who love to sew and enjoy cloth

A Novel On the Life of Anne Lowe

This was a most enjoyable read! Though it is a novel, it brought so much about the life of Anne Lowe, who designed Jacquline Kennedy’s wedding dress. Ms. Lowe learned to design from her mother and grandmother who sewed for the wealthy estate owners in the south.

Inspire to Mend and Patch

This is a great book to start your make, mend, and thrifting journey!

Take a deep look into fast fashion

This is a great, informative read about the fast fashion industry.

Big Items

Professional Iron

This is a more expensive item running about $400. I bought my first one around 2008. It lasted about 8 years with regular use. I promptly replaced it with another. If you are in business there is nothing like a professional iron.

Dress Form

This is a midrange dress form as far as cost. I have also had two of these. My first one lasted about 10 years. However, for the price point it has served my business well and has been fabulous for countless prom, bridal and bridesmaid dresses. I would purchase the medium as it is adjustable. I also have a similar dress form for plus sized.

Industrial Machine

For anyone going into business an industrial machine is a must. The stitch speed alone is reason to invest in one. The model I have is slightly older but this one is most similar.
